What Are Gems?

Gems are one of the types of materials that are used to rank up your Guardians. As with motes, there are universal and role-specific versions of these gems.

Upgrade Gem Types

Universal Gems: These gems can be used as a requirement to upgrade a Guardian to the next rank.

Diamonds are the most commonly used gem. These are often used in conjunction with role-specific gems.

Role Gems: These gems correspond to one of the four roles: Melee, Ranged, Support, and Tank.

When ranking up Guardians with these gems, you will use the gem that corresponds with their role.

Tiers

Gems are split into tiers to signify their strength. As your Guardians and talents rank up and increase in strength, so too will their upgrade requirements.

Capacity

Each full upgrade gem has an individual capacity in your inventory. Once you have exceeded the capacity, any additional upgrade gems will be delivered to your stash where they must be claimed before time runs out.

Gem Shards

You can collect full tier 1 gems and tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 gem shards from gem-gathering encounters. Shards automatically turn into full gems upon receiving the appropriate amount. Gem shards can also be found by completing some event-specific encounters, earning points and achieving specific milestones in dungeons, and spending Laurels in the Alliance store.

You may view the progress of these shards in the GEMS menu on the ARMORY screen.

Where Can I Get Gem Shards?

These shards can be obtained from the appropriate gem-gathering encounters or in some of the in-game stores such as the Alliance store.

How Many Shards Will I Need to Construct a Gem?

This will depend on the tier of the gem. The number of shards needed will be displayed in the inventory menu for each individual gem.

How to Use Your Gems

You will be able to increase the ranks of your Guardians using the required gems and Gold.

To upgrade the rank of your Guardian:

  1. Tap on the GUARDIANS button on the home screen.
  2. Select the Guardian you wish to rank up that is at the correct level.
  3. Tap the UPGRADE button.
    • This button may be illuminated to indicate that you have acquired the resources needed for a level increase rather than a rank increase.
  4. Tap the RANK UP button.
    • You must have met all of the prerequisites in the REQUIREMENTS list in order to proceed to the next rank.
  5. On the RANK UP panel, tap the button that displays the Gold it will cost to rank up your Guardian.
    • This button will be illuminated when all of the requirements necessary for the upgrade have been met.

To view what a Guardian needs to rank up before you have met the necessary prerequisites:

  1. Tap on the GUARDIANS button on the home screen.
  2. Select the Guardian you wish to rank up.
  3. Tap the UPGRADE button.
    • This button may be illuminated to indicate that you have reached the resources needed for a level increase rather than a rank increase.
  4. Tap the RANK UP button.
  5. The RANK UP panel will display the required gems, Gold, and other requirements needed to proceed to the next rank.

Gem Requirements

The requirements for each upgrade depend on the current rank of your Guardian. You may view the requirements once your Guardian is at the level needed for the next rank by tapping the UPGRADE button for Guardians. You may also view the requirements at any other time by tapping the RANK UP button for Guardians.
